Dragon Ball Super Episode 131: "The Miraculous Conclusion! Farewell, Goku! Until We Meet Again!!" Review

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Dragon Ball Super ends its 131-episode run with a glorious finale. Every scene received world-class handling in care and the final boxing striking all the correct notes to add unexpected tension along with a satisfying conclusion. The story hit all the major beats equally well, with the Frieza plotline culminating in an epic squad-up between Goku and Frieza, while the overarching theme of trust brought to a head but how important Goku's allies were, also equally bringing to lite a new friendship between Toppo and Jiren.

The Tournament of Ability marked a noticeable increase in Super's animation quality, and it's clear that everything Toei Blitheness learned along the fashion was practical during Episode 131. Frantic and subtle character movements, the coloring on their bodies, and of course, the explosions of Ki energy were all and so well done that it seems, like this concluding battle, Super reached an incredible new class. No moment highlights this more than the final combined attack of Goku and Frieza as their contrasting colors merge into one giant boom that ultimately wins them the battle. Forth with the visuals, the musical score was perfectly matched, hyping up the fight to such a degree I constitute myself leaning closer to the screen with excitement.

The story didn't have a back seat to the incredible action, though and information technology was great to run across how things were wrapped upwardly while likewise foreshadowing potential events for the futurity. It's almost unbelievable that Android 17 and Frieza could somehow accept stayed hidden for and so long, simply their use in the final episode makes up for it as they each play an important role that I frankly couldn't have seen whatsoever other character filling. Frieza in particular was a highlight. His ruthless fashion and boisterous mental attitude make him such a thrill to lookout, particularly when he thinks he has the upper hand. Having him work with Goku during the terminal battle and how their teamwork complimented the overall theme of friendship and trust made those concluding moments fifty-fifty amend. And, of course, it made the future of Frieza'due south character a trivial more interesting likewise.

While I expected Frieza would get his life dorsum, it was surprising to run across them already tease his render every bit Emperor of the Universe. Frieza is still on the back human foot in terms of strength, so it does get out me wondering how he will compete with Goku in that regard, even with Ultra Instinct inaccessible at the moment. His time spent with Goku surely left a mark as well, so how volition that play into their relationship going forward.

Android 17 ended up being the hero of the day. With the overarching theme of trust, it's fitting that the in one case fell villain at present becomes the savior of all the erased universes. The Tournament of Power brought a lot of characters dorsum into the fold, but none benefited from information technology as much every bit Android 17. He was substantially forgotten, but thanks to the Tournament of Ability and the amazing arc he had throughout information technology, they've brought him back and in wonderfully interesting means. The revelation that Zen-Oh would have erased anybody had 17 not wished for everyone to be saved only makes his wish ameliorate as it truly highlights how far Android 17 has come in such a short fourth dimension.

Super defies the thought that the Saiyans can only salve the day. The end of Super won't mean that the race for greater power is over, but no longer I fright characters becoming irrelevant simply because they can't arise to greater forms, and it'due south this sentiment that I am left with that has me most excited for the futurity of Dragon Ball. Equally corking as Goku is as the hero, allowing other characters to share the spotlight makes for more interesting stories.

Dragon Ball has never been shy about featuring Goku's allies just never before has the trust between them been so important, so integral to his success, than during this finale. Information technology's made for several touching scenes recently, just information technology was even more fully realized when information technology came down to Goku and Frieza's reliance on each other. These two are polar opposites in terms of character, merely both with a desire to alive to fight another day and uphold the promises they fabricated to each other. It also carries through tactfully to Android 17, a former villain, making the prized wish, as well. Toppo and Jiren also saw their ain growth from this equally is seen when Toppo stands upward and thank you for his near-death comrade. While their friendship isn't near as developed every bit others, it made for a touching moment as we saw the initial sparks forming.

DBS131Army

The epilogue scene was a delightful sendoff for Dragon Brawl Super. The Goku and Vegeta boxing was a nice call-back to days gone by, and the presence of Frieza and his army makes an easy setup for future conflict. The fan in me would have liked to run across annihilation else teased to allow the series simmer on until the inevitable next serial arrives, like potential consequences for reviving all the universes, but I still came out incredibly happy with the end.

The Verdict

Episode 131 is easily one of the best episodes in Dragon Brawl Super. From beginning to end information technology'due south a standout in quality. The animation and audio pattern piece of work perfectly together, making the concluding battle astonishing to behold. The story nails overarching themes of trust and friendship for all sides of the Tournament of Ability so wraps up loose ends while leaving just enough open for future. Virtually of all, Episode 131 makes information technology clear that while Goku may be the hero, his friends are every bit every bit important, not to be forgotten every bit relics stuck on the sidelines. While the catastrophe may accept kept things open up-ended, it doesn't modify the fact that Dragon Brawl Super ended on a truly special episode, not soon to be forgotten.
